VW’s flagship model has been around for a while and we believe that the next year won’t bring any significant updates. Simply, this large SUV still looks very fresh in every aspect. Therefore, we count on a familiar design, though novelties will come to the Australian market, as the 2022 VW Touareg will be the first model year to come in a hi-performance variant in this part of the world.
All in all, you may count on a luxurious SUV, which has a lot of great things to offer. We particularly like its high-end interior design, which is full of quality materials and tech features. Furthermore, the standard air suspension makes the ride smooth like butter. Finally, there is a pretty impressive powertrain offer, which includes gasoline, diesel and hybrid options.
As there are no significant changes to come, we presume that the 2022 VW Touareg will hit the market sometime late in the year.
2022 VW Touareg Design
The current, third generation of VW Touareg has been around since 2018. It still looks very fresh in nearly every aspect and what we particularly like about it is the ride quality, which is incredibly smooth. That’s no wonder at all, considering that the current generation shares a lot of parts with premium SUVs like Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne etc. It also rides on the MLB platform and just like the Q7, it comes standard with air suspension.
Visually, this SUV comes in a typical VW manner. It is simple and very conservative. Some rivals may look flashier, but this approach ensures a fresh look for years. The 2022 VW Touareg shouldn’t bring any surprise regarding styling. However, there is always a chance to see smaller updates, such as new color options. We won’t exclude the possibility to see a new visual package in the offer either.
The same thing goes for interior design. Things will continue in the same way and that makes perfect sense. Simply, there aren’t many things not to like inside this SUV. The overall quality is pretty impressive. Typically for VW, fit and finish are excellent, while there is also a generous amount of high-quality materials. The overall impression is really great, while the long list of tech and convenience goodies makes everything look even more upscale.
Besides plenty of luxury, this cabin is also pretty spacious. Three rows of seats are standard and all three can accommodate adult passengers. The front seats are particularly comfortable, while we also like the driving position, which is pretty good. Despite the size, this SUV also offers pretty good visibility in all directions. We also like that the digital instrument cluster is standard, as well as a massive touchscreen on the center stack.
2022 VW Touareg Engines
When it comes to powertrain, count on no surprises. This SUV comes with several engine options and the actual offer may differ from market to market. In most cases, the offer starts with a 2.0-liter turbo-four, which puts out around 250 horsepower. Still, most drivers rather choose a 3.0-liter V6, which is good for about 340 horsepower. The same engine is also available in a hybridized variant, with a max output of 381 horsepower.
Of course, you may also count on diesel options. There is a well-known 3.0-liter V6 TDI, which puts out around 230 horsepower. The same engine is available in a more powerful variant, with a max output of 286 horsepower. On the other hand, the 4.0-liter V8 TDI has been discontinued. The replacement comes in the form of a plug-in hybrid, which powers the R-badged model.
2022 VW Touareg R
In most markets, this nameplate is already a common thing. On the other hand, the 2022 VW Touareg R will be the first model year in Australia. It won’t feature bigger differences compared to the R models in other markets. So, you may count on various upgrades, starting from the new powertrain. It is a plug-in hybrid setup, based on a 3.0-liter V6 engine, which comes in pair with a 136-hp electric motor. The total output goes up to 462 horsepower (340kW). That’s enough to ensure 0-100-km/h spring in a little bit over five seconds, while the top speed is electronically limited at 250km/h. The batter has a capacity of 14.1 kWh and ensures a max all-electric range of around 46 kilometers.
2022 VW Touareg Release Date
Since there are no significant changes to come, we expect that the 2022 VW Touareg will hit the market sometime in the last quarter of the year.
