We’ve been hearing reports about Volvo’s new flagship SUV for a pretty long time and it looks like things are finally official. According to the latest reports, the new model will come already in the next year, as the 2022 Volvo XC100. It will be a full-size crossover, designed to compete with class leaders from Mercedes-Benz, BMW X7 etc.
The new SUV will be pretty big but that won’t be its only quality. It will also come with a full load of advanced technologies. Among them, we should also find an all-electric version, though more conventional hybrid and pure gasoline variants will be offered too.
2022 Volvo XC100 Design
When it comes to the overall design, the first thing we should mention is the platform. As you may presume, the new 2022 Volvo XC100 will ride on a familiar SPA II platform, which is the company’s modular architecture that will underprint the entire lineup in the future. In this case, it will bring a lot of benefits. One of the first things that come to mind is electrification, as this platform supports all kinds of powertrain options.
As we are talking about a flagship model, we count on various other upgrades, especially in terms of the chassis and suspension design, which should provide a super-high level of comfort and impressive ride quality.
Exterior
In terms of the exterior design, we should talk about the size first. Obviously, this model will be notably bigger compared to the mid-size XC90 model, which measures around 117.5 inches in wheelbase and nearly 195 inches in total length. The new 2022 Volvo XC100 should be notably bigger and we count on a similar size to future rivals like BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS. In other words, the wheelbase will certainly go way over 120 inches. Some sources suggest a total length of 205 inches, which would make this Volvo one of the biggest models in the class.
On the other side, details about the styling are still unavailable. The only thing we can say at this point is that we expect the Swedish manufacturer to establish a completely new design language, notably different compared to what we can find in the current lineup. Most sources suggest a much boxier appearance, with a full load of futuristic details. Some rendering photos have also appeared on the network.
Interior
We feel it’s still early to talk about interior design. Still, we can talk about some most basic things. For example, we count on a completely new dashboard design, notably different compared to what we can see in the current lineup. More importantly, the new cabin will offer plenty of space. We count on three very spacious rows of seats and even the last row should be able to accommodate adults comfortably. The cargo area should offer some pretty respectable numbers as well.
2022 Volvo XC100 Engines
Naturally, we count on a variety of powertrain options in the offer. We can hear a lot about the all-electric version. Such a powertrain is coming for sure, but we don’t know anything about the numbers at this point. Most likely, we will see a dual motor setup, similar to the XC40 Recharge, only more powerful.
Also, we are pretty sure that this won’t be the only powertrain option on the offer. We also count on both gasoline and hybrid versions in the offer. When it comes to the pure gasoline option, we presume we would see an upgraded version of the current turbo-four engine. On the other hand, we hope for a completely new plug-in hybrid setup, which would replace the current, not-particularly-refined powertrain.
Features
Another thing that comes to mind is the level of standard equipment. As we are talking about the future flagship model, the list of standard features should be really long. We count on all kinds of tech and convenience features, while Volvo will traditionally offer a full load of safety systems. Among them, autonomous driving takes a special place.
We presume that things will be the same as in the case of the upcoming next-generation XC90. In other words, the Swedish manufacturer will install all necessary hardware, while the software part will come a few years later.
2022 Volvo XC100 Release Date and Price
The 2022 Volvo XC100 should come sometime in the next year. Although it is still early for more precise estimations, we believe that the new model will feature starting price that goes between 75.000 and 80.000 dollars.
