We can see a lot of new all-electric SUVs advertising but most of them still wait to enter serial production. One of the first to come will be the 2022 Rivian R1S, which will be an SUV version of the R1T pickup truck. It will also feature quite distinctive styling, along with the same mechanics and drivetrain options. This will be a pretty capable SUV, which will offer plenty of range, impressive acceleration, as well as a respectable towing capacity.
Besides all these advanced tech solutions, the R1S will also be a comfortable and luxurious vehicle. It will feature genuine full-size SUV dimensions, which promises plenty of space on the inside, along with a full load of standard equipment. A great thing to know is that you will have a choice between three different versions, with different batteries and an electric motor. Other customization options will be in the offer too. The first models will arrive in August, according to the manufacturer.
2022 Rivian R1S Drivetrain
Of course, one of the first things that come to mind is the drivetrain, as we are talking about an all-electric SUV. At this point, we know for sure there will be three variants in the offer. The most basic version will feature a smaller battery pack and less powerful electric motors. You may count on a 105-kWh battery pack, which should provide a max range of 250 miles. This version will be good for about 402 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, which should be enough to move this large SUV from zero to sixty in under five seconds.
The Mid-Range option will be the fastest one. It will feature a quad-electric motor setup, with a total output of 753 horsepower and 826 pound-feet of torque. That should be enough for a 0-60 spring in just 3 seconds. It will be equipped with a 135-kWh battery, which should be enough for 310 miles on a single charge.
The Long Range version will feature the same setup in terms of electric motors. However, it will be slightly slower, due to a bigger 180-kWh battery pack. On the other side, the obvious benefit will be the addition of 100 miles of range, compared to the Mid Range version, for the total autonomy of 410 miles.
Interestingly, all three versions will feature the same max towing and payload capacities, of 7.700 and 1.800 pounds, respectively.
2022 Rivian R1S Design
In terms of base design characteristics, the 2022 Rivian R1S won’t be significantly different from its pickup sibling. Of course, the body style is completely different but the mechanical aspect remains the same. Not only that they share the platform, but the chassis and suspension setup remains the same as well.
In terms of the size, you may count on typical full-size SUV dimensions. With 121 inches in wheelbase, we can talk about a vehicle that offers plenty of space for passengers and cargo. The front end looks identical to the truck counterpart, while the rest of the body features a typical SUV layout. The rear end looks really boxy, while the tailgate is literally vertical, which means you may count one really cargo-friendly cabin.
Of course, plenty of storage space won’t be the only great thing about this SUV. You may count on a well-built cabin, which will combine quality materials with futuristic aesthetics. Everything looks perfectly mannered for an electric SUV and another thing we should talk about is the passenger space. Base models will come with two rows of seats, while the third row will be optional. This version will be able to accommodate seven adult passengers with ease. As we already mentioned, the cargo area will be pretty generous. You may count on 104 cubic feet of total cargo volume, which is quite typical for the class.
Naturally, the cabin will come fully loaded with advanced tech features. All models will come standard with a large 12.3-inch instrument cluster, while the infotainment screen will even bigger. Of course, you may count on goodies like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Wi-Fi hot spot, wireless charging etc.
One of the things that look particularly interesting is the infotainment system. Instead of going through menus and submenus, you will only have to slide out of the side of the tiles in order to find things you need. The manufacturer claims this way is far easier to use compared to more common infotainment systems.
2022 Rivian R1S Release Date and Price
The first version will come in August and it will be the most capable variant, with the starting price around 77.500 dollars. The base model probably won’t come before 2022, and it should go around 70.000 dollars. Key competitors will be models like Tesla Model X, Bolinger B1, Jaguar I-Pace etc.
