The German carmaker made a big turn with its flagship crossover with the last-year redesign. The large SUV is no more available in North America but rather just in Europe, China and a few more market. It has definitely taken a position of a premium model, but things are going even further, as the new 2021 VW Touareg R is on the way.
The new version has been presented already and there are some pretty interesting things. Of course, the R-badge stands for a hi-performance version, but the thing with it is that it comes with a plug-in hybrid, something you wouldn’t expect from VW in its domestic field, in Europe, where we believed the (in)famous TDI oil-burners still rule. However, it looks like times are changing and the 2021 VW Touareg R is proving that is a pretty stylish way. As we’ve just mentioned, the new version had a premiere recently and we are now waiting for the launch, which should happen later in the years.
2021 VW Touareg R Powertrain
There is no doubt that the powertrain is the most interesting part of this version. This is the first hi-performance plug-in hybrid model under VW’badge, but the powertrain is actually quite familiar. If you are familiar with Porsche Cayenne powertrain options, you will be glad to see that the same PHEV is now under the hood of 2021 VW Touareg R. Of course, we are talking about the same system that powers Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid.
This means you may count on a system that is based on a 3.0-liter V6 that delivers around 335 horsepower. Additionally, there is a powerful 134-hp electric motor, so a combined output goes up to a pretty impressive 456 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. Moreover, you may also count on 30 miles of the all-electric range, while the top speed in this mode goes around 87 miles per hour.
In terms of performances, we expect similar numbers as in the Cayenne E Hybrid, which would mean 0-60 time in around 5 seconds, while the top speed would be electronically limited to 155 mph.
2021 VW Touareg R Design
Of course, we count on various distinctive styling details on the 2021 VW Touareg R. From what we can see on the prototype, there are various details that emphasize the model’s performance character. Of course, many of these tweaks are on the front face. The first thing you will notice is a new, black grille that replaces the luxurious chromed unit. Blacked details can be found all over the vehicle, while the wheel is also of these dark colors.
Besides various styling details, you may count on a couple of mechanical modifications as well. Of course, this particularly refers to the suspension setup and brakes, as well as some chassis reinforcements.
2021 VW Touareg R Interior
When it comes to interior design, it is still unknown whether this model is about to come with the third row in the offer or not. At this point, we can only presume that this feature will be offered as options. On the other side, the overall interior layout will remain the same. Of course, there is always enough room the accentuate the model’s sporty character, but the overall cabin look won’t change too much. That definitely isn’t a bad thing, considering that the Touareg features an impressive cabin quality. Just one look at the dashboard and you know this is a premium crossover. The materials are amazing, as well as the dashboard shape. Add to this the excellent digital instrument cluster, new touchscreen and all kinds of other digital goodies, and you get one of the best interiors among all mid-size crossovers.
2021 VW Touareg R Release Date and Price
The 2021 VW Touareg R will have the official premiere at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, while sales should start later in the year. When it comes to the price, we are still waiting for the details.
