Engelberg Tourer is the new concept by Mitsubishi. Plug-in hybrid drivetrain and three rows of seats are its highlights. Enough to be the platform for the next-gen 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander. The mid-size model is already recognizable for the PHEV system. A large Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi alliance is taking advantage of the joint development of such drivetrains. So, in the future, we will see even better mileage.
The new concept will update the look of the upcoming 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander. First spy photos are here, but we can’t compare test mules with the Engelberg Tourer architecture. However, one thing is sure – Outlander is going to be bigger. More space for passengers and cargo are certain, as well as the fresh PHEV configuration with a longer range. Well, that is enough for the new generation of the SUV.
Sales in the US are jumping. In the last few years, Outlander is achieving better results. In 2018 this model had 42,000 sales, nearly 20 percent more than in 2017. This season the increase was even higher. So, with the new generation, Mitsubishi will try to become one of the best-sellers in the USA.
2021 Mitsubishi Outlander Engines and Specs (Gas Mileage, Towing Capacity)
Under the hood of the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander engineers will keep a 2.4-liter engine. A four-cylinder engine is producing 166 hp, which is not so competitive in the mid-size SUV market. However, the fuel economy is a good reason to consider it a good buy. With 27 mpg combined, it is one of the best models in its segment. The engine is paired with a CVT gearbox that sends power to front wheels. Optionally, you can pick the super All-Wheel Control as one of the best available upgrades. Towing capacity also suffers because of the size of engines. The maximum hauling potential of a four-pot mill is 1,500 lbs.
If you want more, you need to spend extra. With a 3.0-liter V6 unit, the towing capacity raises to 3,500 pounds. But, the engine is available only with a top of the line GT trim. We expect the same offer by the 2021 Outlander. In this case, the SUV gains 225 hp and 215 l-ft of torque. All-wheel drive is the only option, and the fuel economy of 27 mpg is achieved on the highway. Combined, the consumption jumps to 23 mpg.
2021 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
Mitsubishi’s advanced technology leads to the development of the plug-in hybrid drivetrain. This system is based on a 2.0-liter petrol engine, which pairs a 60 kW twin electric motors for a total output of 117 hp and 137 lb-ft. The new concept will bring the latest technologies and higher ratings. For the mid-size SUV, this is just not enough.
The 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander new model will increase outputs. The cooperation with Nissan and other members of the alliance will make this possible. The new system will still be based on a 2.0-l engine, but the electric power is going to generate higher outputs. We found some rumors speaking of 200 hp and the fuel economy above 90 MPGe. During next season we will find out if this is turning up to be the truth.
2021 Mitsubishi Outlander New Model, Sport, Redesign
The new generation of the mid-size three-row SUV means we will see a completely new model. The 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander will step into the market with a fresh design. The inspiration comes from the brand-new Engelberg Tourer concept. We saw this platform at the latest Geneva Auto Show. The company will use it as the base for the next Outlander, that is for sure.
However, the look of the new model is too futuristic. Designers will have a lot of work to make it ready for production. The first tests are ongoing, and there are a lot of differences at first sight. Through the camo, we see the strip headlights. On the other hand, the Engelberg concept is showing large parts on the entire front fascia. But, the test mules are significantly bigger than the current Outlander. It confirms theories that SUV is growing thanks to the new architecture.
After the latest update, the third-gen SUV is 185 inches long. Still, there is no too much space inside, especially with the third row up (10 cubic feet). Fold rear seats, and you get an extra 24 cu.ft. The new generation will increase the total cargo space. Also, if the company installs just a portion of what we see on the Engelberg Tourer platform, the new Outlander will be awesome. Onboard navigation is one of the best features we will find on the dashboard. Large touchscreen display and a lot of safety equipment are highlighted are also promised.
The current generation of the SUV is already six years old. By the time the 2021 Mitsubishi Outlander, it will be a moment for the totally new model. The company already presented the concept and test mules are being tested so that the production could start shortly.
