The 2020 VW Atlas is going to be the largest SUV by the German carmaker. The flagship model is heading to the redesign and it is bringing some radical changes. Still, the SUV is pretty versatile, and it offers interesting variations. Definitely, we can’t wait to see the Cross Sport two-row version. Another vehicle based on the big SUV is going to be Atlas Tanoak pickup truck. After the huge scandal, Volkswagen is recovering. The smaller Cross Sport will update the drivetrain with a hybrid engine. Outside the US, you will find this model as VW Teramont X.
Well, we will have to wait for the upcoming smaller version to see what kind of changes will happen to its larger, base sibling. Hybrid is definitely on the way. The 2020 VW Atlas R Line will be the trim level with the most advanced accessories. Cargo space and horsepower rating by the standard versions will remain the same, and the SUV could offer better gas mileage.
Volkswagen Atlas Changes for 2020
We hope that the new 2020 VW Atlas is not going to follow the footsteps of the Cross Sport sibling. The smaller SUV is more aggressive. But, changes on the front fascia are not eye-catching. The company cuts the LED lights and the grille is too ordinary. We already got used to the distinctive styling of Atlas’ front fascia. Definitely, the upcoming 7-seat SUV will use some of the latest styling solutions. At the back, the 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport is also very clean, without any interesting details.
Atlas Cross Sport
The new 2020 VW Atlas Cross Sport will be a two-row version of the seven-seat SUV. It is 7.5 inches shorter and 2.5 inches lower than the base version. As said, the styling of the Cross Sport is different. But, it doesn’t mean Atlas will succeed all the changes the new version is bringing. Outside the US, it appears as Teramont X, while the 7-seat model is just Teramont. We could see the premiere of the Atlas Cross Sport (Teramont X) in China, while the US version for 2020 is not ready yet. Spy photos are showing the SUV is in the final stages of development, so its premiere could happen very soon.
Tanoak Truck is Based on Atlas SUV
Although it is a mid-size model, Atlas is a good base for a new sporty truck by the German carmaker. We are still waiting for the production of this vehicle. The first appearance, the concept had last spring. During summer, the truck went through some serious tests, and now the Volkswagen is making the final cuts before the production start. Whatsoever, the 2020 VW Atlas Tanoak is not going to be a classic hauling machine, since the company is going to bring sportier character to the new arrival.
Engines and 2020 VW Atlas Hybrid
Under the hood of the base mid-size three-row SUV is going to be a turbo-four engine. A 2.0-l displacement is capable to produce 235 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission and the 4Motion AWD are a standard part of the drivetrain system. The SUV comes with three different modes – Normal, Eco, and Sport. Economy mode improves gas mileage, while the Sport mode boosts the performance. More horsepower for the 2020 VW Atlas comes from a 3.6-liter V6 engine. It uses the same gearbox and drive options. However, the hp rating jumps to 275, while this engine also adds 10 lb-ft more than the turbo-four unit. On the other hand, the gas mileage drops to 19 mpg, compared to the 24 mpg returned from a smaller drivetrain.
The 2020 VW Atlas Hybrid will fix these numbers. Well, the only image showing us the plug-in version is outdated, but it is certain that the German company is planning to add such drivetrain in the near future. The hybrid Atlas would be based on a V6 engine. If we compare it to rivals, we will find Toyota Highlander, as the only mid-size three-row model in this segment. The Atlas could be another seven-seat SUV with a hybrid engine. If it brings a PHEV variant, it will launch the SUV into stardom. However, without indications from the company and spy photos still not showing this, we need to wait to get the full info.
2020 VW Atlas Release Date and Price
The release date of the new 2020 VW Atlas is still a mystery. Experts believe the company will put the focus on the new model, Cross Sport. So, this one is going to arrive first. However, the standard edition will follow, probably with the hybrid engine as the main change for the 2020 season. Also, we will continue checking updates about the Tanoak truck and possible pricing of the Atlas 7-seat SUV. With the only a cosmetic update, the base model will still sit just under $32,000. A V6 adds $3,000. Hybrid will probably be around $40k.
