The largest Mercedes SUV is an ultra-luxurious GLS. Unlike some other rivals, this is the 7-seat model, without options to take 8 spots. The new 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS is getting some updates to make the offer even more premium. Of course, top of the range model remains the AMG version with super-high outputs and latest hi-tech equipment. It is hard to compete with MB, so the German company is the synonym for the most luxurious offer in the US market.
Changes for the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS include a new engine and few cosmetic updates. Next year we will see the 7-seat SUV with a twin-turbo V8 setup. The arrival of this unit will launch the new generation which will be on the market for the next few years. For now, we know there will be two versions of the SUV – GLS 450 and GLS 580. Although unconfirmed, we know the MB will deliver the AMG model as well. The vehicle debuted at NY Auto Show, but the sales haven’t started yet.
2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS vs BMW X7
Definitely, the biggest rival to the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS will be the BMW X7. The Bavarian carmaker launched the all-new full-size SUV and it received excellent feedback right from the start. This is one of the reasons why Mercedes developed the new generation of its GLS. The battle will be interesting since it is very hard to decide which of these two is better. Big engines, high output, luxurious interiors, and premium styling are what both SUVs are offering. There are also high-end versions available – AMG GLS 63 and X7M. The price could be the key factor. The base BMW’s full-size SUV will cost $75,000 and the M package adds $40,000-$50,000 more. The new GLS is going to offer similar prices.
2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS Engines and Specs
The star of the next-gen 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS is a new EQ Boost electric system. It turns the big SUV into a mild-hybrid model. Both V6 and V8 units will pair this new system to boost their outputs. Standard configuration is a 3.0-liter V6, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and famous 4Matic AWD. Without EQ, the setup is good for 362 hp, while the electric support adds 21 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. So, the final outputs are 383 hp and 553 lb-ft. You will find this model as GLS450.
Instead of GLS550 now we have GLS580. In this case, a 4.0-liter engine paired with an EQ Boost replaces the old one. This V8 unit is capable to produce 483 hp and 516 pound-feet of torque for various other models. For the next-gen 2020 Mercedes GLS580, it delivers 504 hp and 700 pound-feet of torque. This is a big upgrade from a current level – 450 hp and 520 lb-ft. The engine keeps a 9-speed gearbox and all-wheel drive as standard options.
GLS 63 AMG
Top of the class version of the new full-size luxury SUV will arrive a year later after the standard model. The new 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLS 63 AMG was spied a month after the base SUV debuted. We can see Panamericana grille and a few other details that are available for some of the latest members of the AMG family. Some reports say that AMG 63 could go up to 700 hp thanks to the special electric motors. However, the German carmaker didn’t unveil any mechanical details of its beast. Well, we will have to wait to get the updates from Mercedes, since the AMG is due to be 2021 year model.
The third generation of the GLS SUV will bring numerous changes. Of course, Mercedes is always keeping everything at the highest possible level, challenging all other rivals with its luxury packages, elegant and comfortable interior, and powerful and reliable engines. This time, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS will borrow some solutions from the S-class sedans. The 7-seat SUV is going to use the latest design language which includes the A/C rectangular vents at the central console. Two large displays are there as well, each 12-inches wide. Of course, leather is everywhere, making the interior of the GLS very exclusive. A two-tone color is standard, while Alcantara leather is available at higher trim levels.
A 7-seat layout is standard. However, the new SUV will offer captain’s chairs for the middle row. In this case, the GLS becomes a six-seater with more space for passengers. This was not an option for its predecessor. Well, MB is always ready to listen to their buyers. Many of them wished they had such a layout.
The highlight of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS interior will be the new MBUX system. Infotainment console will learn from your moves and make predictions when you repeat similar actions. Capacity and cargo volume details are not available yet, as well as fuel consumption numbers.
2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS Price
Although new, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS will keep the starting price its predecessor had. Well, the company is not going to leave BMW X7 to be more affordable than its SUV. However, small differences in the region around $75,000 are not too big. However, the price of higher trims, GLS580 and AMG are jumping rapidly. A V8 engine and its upgrades will lead to a six-digit price. Top of the range model with the AMG badge will exceed $130k without extras.
