The CX-9 is the largest SUV by the Japanese company Mazda. In its homeland, the carmaker had to decrease its dimensions and sell it as CX-8. Rumors about the 2020 Mazda CX-9 redesign are louder since the SUV is ready for a mid-cycle update. The latest generation dates back from 2016.
The facelift will be visible on the front and back. Also, the interior is under a revisit. More exterior colors for the CX-9 are available. The most favorite packages are Signature and Grand Touring. If we compare Mazda CX-9 2020 vs 2019, we can find some big differences.
Read the full review and check if this mid-size SUV can stand the competition of Ford Explorer and Honda Pilot. It is not all since the company plans further updates. Don’t take it for granted, but by the end of 2020, we could see the diesel engine as well.
Trim Levels, Seating Configurations
The entry-level for the 2020 Mazda CX-9 lineup remains the Sport model. The basic package for the stylish SUV includes 18-inch wheels, dual exhaust tips, and LED lights. Interior comes with the three-zone climate control, seven seats, Mazda Connect infotainment, and a blind-spot monitor.
Touring trim adds lane departure warning, heated mirrors, a power liftgate, and heated seats covered by leather. Lumbar support is available for driver bucket. An 8-inch touchscreen is the center of the Mazda Connect system.
If you are willing to spend more money, we recommend the purchase of a Grand Touring SUV. Larger wheels and moonroof are cool additions that will make you fall in love with 2020 Mazda CX-9. Bose audio, navigation, and heated second row are only a few of the updates you will find on the Grand Touring trim.
However, it is not the best the CX-9 has to offer. The Signature model brings the best out of the SUV with premium captain’s chairs in the middle row and seating capacity for six persons. Nappa leather is covering interior upholstery and Santos Rosewood inlays are making the cockpit more stylish.
2020 Mazda CX-9 Redesign Changes and Colors Update
The rumors about the 2020 Mazda CX-9 are louder every day. The mid-cycle update will bring a lot of changes, but we still don’t know too much about it. One thing is certain – the SUV is getting more colors options. At this point, there are seven available paintjobs. Definitely, the most recognizable is red one called Soul Red Crystal Metallic. Top of the class trim is offering only four colors.
The black cloth is an interior scheme. Touring and Grand Touring SUVs are offering options between black and sand leather. Top of the line Signature version uses Nappa brown leather and unique stitching.
2020 Mazda CX-9 Specs, Diesel
The update of the 2020 Mazda CX-9 is not going to replace the reliable and durable turbocharged engine. A 2.5-liter four-cylinder mill can produce 250 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. It is a 23 hp boost compared to the 2019 model. The drivetrain sends power through a six-speed auto gearbox to front wheels. All-wheel drive comes as an optional feature.
The mid-size SUV is not among the best-in-class for towing. It is rated only at 3,500 pounds. The rest of the segment goes around 5,000 lbs, while the vehicles with the highest towing capacity reach 6,200 pounds (Dodge Durango). On the other hand, we can’t expect too much from an SUV that gets power from a four-cylinder engine. Its a highlight is a class-leading fuel economy, which will be around 25 mpg combined.
One of the downsides of the CX-9 was the lack of diesel engine, especially outside the US. According to rumors, the next update will bring a diesel unit. We know Mazda is developing the new 2.2-liter turbodiesel engine. However, the drivetrain is not confirmed for the largest SUV in the lineup. We believe the vehicle will need more power, and Mazda could turn to some other solutions.
