The new Grand Cherokee is going to offer the third row of seats, but it won’t be the only Jeep with such configuration. The FCA announced earlier that Grand Wagoneer is coming in 2020. It is a full-size SUV that must come with a seven-seat configuration. The larger version of the Grand Cherokee will compete with the Ford Expedition and Chevy Tahoe. We still don’t know if the Wagoneer is going to be the base version and the 2020 Jeep Grand Wagoneer an extended model, like Expedition MAX, or Chevrolet Suburban.
Either way, the new SUV will offer more space and the large displacement as the base choice. Also, a diesel engine is an option. The carmaker is not releasing any details, although we can hear the FCA is testing a vehicle larger than the any other currently in the offer. The famous radiator grille is unveiling this is the new Jeep SUV.
Concept and Spy Photos
The latest spy photos unveiled prototypes of the 2020 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. The company will definitely revive the nameplate discontinued back in 1991. Do not be confused with the truck being on spy photos, since this is the FCA’s tactics to hide the new SUV. At first, we thought it is the special version of the new Gladiator pickup. But the size and the close look to the front fascia say it can be turned to the SUV pretty easily.
The 2020 Jeep Grand Wagoneer will use the same concept as the Ram 1500. The truck-based SUV is about to become a competitor in the body-on-frame segment that will offer a better towing capacity and off-road capability. We can see similar products in the Toyota Sequoia and Nissan Armada. Still, the spy shots are showing an independent rear suspension that will improve the handling and balance of the new SUV.
2020 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Specs (Towing Capacity, Horsepower)
FCA will deploy the largest unit for their new flagship model. It is a 6.4-liter V8 Hemi drivetrain. Well, we believe it is an optional engine, while the 5.7-liter V8 could be the primary powertrain. In this case, the SUV will start with 360 horsepower and 390 pound-feet of torque. We don’t know if the 2020 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is going to use the 4WD only or the rear-wheel drive is the base option. Grand Cherokee is now using the 2WD.
Of course, the Grand Wagoneer 7-seater SUV will also come with a 6.4 Hemi unit as an optional motor for the engine room. The SRT edition for other configurations is capable to produce 475 hp and 470 lb-ft. However, do not expect the new vehicle to use the SRT badge. According to the latest rumors, even the Grand Cherokee will rename this model to Trackhawk.
The 2020 Jeep Grand Wagoneer is a mystery. The SUV is very large and we don’t know how it will fit. Still, if this happens, the vehicle is getting the most powerful setup in the segment, with 707 hp coming from the 6.2-liter supercharged V8.
Towing capacity is going to depend on the size of the engine. The maximum haul the Hemi engine can pull is 7,500 pounds. A 5.7 and Hellcat 6.2 unit are rated at 7,200 lbs.
2020 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Diesel
Another possibility for the 2020 Grand Wagoneer is to get a diesel unit. The new EcoDiesel is available and it can create 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. In this case, the towing capacity will jump over 10k lbs. Still, the company will also look for the greener source of power. A hybrid Wagoneer is a topic of the latest rumors. It is not impossible, especially with the mild-hybrid system available for Ram 1500 truck.
Interior, Cargo Space
With the test mule being presented as a truck, we can’t know what shape the 2020 Jeep Grand Wagoneer will take. A few things are known – the new model will be the largest in the SUV lineup and it will offer more cargo space than the Grand Cherokee. The total volume of the mid-size SUV is 105 cubic feet. However, the third row is going to redistribute the space behind each row.
Grand Wagoneer is a new 8-seat SUV in the market. It will face the competition if the Ford Expedition and Chevy Suburban/Tahoe. However, the company is going to offer the 7-seater version with captain’s chairs in the middle row.
2020 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Release Date, Price
Grand Wagoneer will appear next year. We still don’t know the precise info, but the new SUV could also come as 2021 YM. The latest official detail is already two years old and back in 2017, the FCA announced the comeback for 2020. But, the competition in the market could be too strong with the new Ford Bronco on the way.
By being bigger than the Grand Cherokee, the 2020 Jeep Grand Wagoneer will be more expensive. The fresh design is going to cost extra. We believe that the base price will start over $50,000. Upper trim levels with Hemi and Hellcat drivetrains can reach a six-digit price.
