FCA presented a couple of new models for the next season. Among others, there is one of the most versatile SUV in the market, 2020 Dodge Durango. The mid-size model is getting the final update before it starts a new chapter as a body-on-frame model. The new generation is debuting in 2021 and the company decided to go all-in before its redesign. The wish of many fans is granted and Durango is getting the most powerful engine in the market. The Hellcat drivetrain becomes part of the lineup for this SUV in the upcoming season!
However, there is a catch. The new unit will be used only for law enforcement. The Police are going to chase criminals with the new monster that crunches out 797 horsepower. So, the new 2020 Dodge Durango produces 90 ponies more than its sibling, Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. This special drivetrain setup is borrowed by the Dodge Challenger Redeye. So, if you want to test this monster, you will have to join the Police squad. Otherwise, the 2020 Durango comes mostly unchanged and waiting for the new generation.
2020 Dodge Durango Dimensions, Cargo Space, Towing Capacity
The 2020 Dodge Durango will be 200 inches long. For example, that is 8 inches longer than Toyota Highlander, and 1 inch extra compared to Nissan Pathfinder or the new Ford Explorer. That offers extra space for the interior of this eight-seat SUV. The wheelbase is 120 inches and total interior volume behind the first row is 85 cubic feet (3 cubic feet more than Explorer and 1 cubic foot more than Highlander). Cargo space with the third row down is 43 cubic feet and with all seats up 17 cubic feet. Toyota Highlander offers 14 cu.ft., and Ford Explorer leads the class with 21 cu.ft.
The maximum towing capacity of this eight-seater SUV is 8,700 pounds. But it is an expensive upgrade since you will have to purchase a 6.4-liter engine. A lighter V8 variant can haul 7,400 pounds. The base model with a V6 drivetrain has a towing capacity of 6,200 pounds, which is still respectable for such an engine.
The drivetrain lineup of the new 2020 Dodge Durango remains unchanged. The three-row SUV will use a 3.6-liter V6 engine as the base one. With 295 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, it is more than competitive for the mid-size segment. Also, the engine returns 19/26 mpg. Durango will offer more power if you decide to purchase a V8 engine. Well, both available units will consume more fuel. Of course, these kinds of drivetrains will make the price go up. But, a 5.7-liter unit will bring the pace of a full-size SUV with 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission can shut down four cylinders to save some fuel when conditions allow that.
2020 Dodge Durango SRT
The most powerful edition in the next year’s lineup remains the popular SRT. As we mentioned, the larger V8 2020 Durango can offer is a 6.4-liter Hemi unit with 475 hp and 470 pound-feet of torque. Besides the engine, this edition is upgrading exterior and interior with a combination of aggressive and distinctive parts. All-wheel drive is standard and the SRT package brings Brembo brakes, Billstein suspension, and 20-inch wheels. Paddle shifters are also available. The engine is powerful and loud, so Dodge creates the special noise cancellation system, available only with the 2020 Dodge Durango SRT SUV.
Durango is Getting the Hellcat Engine
For a long time, we can hear speculations about the 2020 Dodge Durango Hellcat. It is a 707 horsepower edition with the special 6.2-liter supercharged engine. The Hellcat drivetrain is available for the Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. Also, the FCA teases its fans with easter eggs about this engine becoming the part of the lineup in its most popular truck, Ram 1500.
We are finally getting the Durango with this unit next year. But, not the 707 hp version. Nope, engineers are not downgrading the engine. Instead, the company decides to go with the most powerful configuration they have – the Redeye edition from the Dodge Challenger. That means the 2020 Dodge Durango Hellcat Redeye is getting 797 horsepower. The bad news is that SUV is not going to be available for commercial use. Police squad is using the new Durango for pursuits. Well, maybe this is a hint that the new generation of the SUV will get the Hellcat engine.
The Future of Dodge Durango
After 2020 Dodge Durango we will see the new generation of the three-row SUV. The vehicle is moving to the body on frame platform that will cause numerous changes. Well, FCA is moving its production to Warren, Ohio from Jefferson North Assembly in Michigan. Still, the new Durango will remain the mid-size model that is going to battle Toyota 4Runner as the only models using a ladder frame in the segment. Another one could be the upcoming 2020 Ford Bronco.
